Born in Goulburn, he was employed as a bank clerk at the Wagga branch of the Commercial Bank prior to enlistment.
Lindsay was well-known in sporting circles – he was the secretary of the Wagga Wagga Lawn Tennis Club and represented Wagga against Albury in 1915.
His enlistment papers indicate he had served in the Colonial Forces prior to enlisting with the AIF in December 1915.
A trooper with the 1st Light Horse Regiment, Lindsay embarked from Sydney aboard the RMS Mooltan (August 19, 1916) and disembarked at Suez a month later.
Here, he marched into the isolation camp at Moascar (Egypt).
During WWI, this camp provided the final preparation for entrainment to Alexandria and the Western Front.
Importantly, the isolation camp also served as a quarantine station.
Soldiers arriving in Egypt as reinforcements were under observation for a two-week period, and screened for any illnesses such as measles, which could break out when people were crowded together for long periods.
Lindsay served for three years in the Middle East, from August 19, 1916 to April 19, 1919.
At 10am on October 5, 1918, Lindsay (stationed at Wadi Zerka), was being shown the mechanism of a revolver by an interpreter, Jamiel-Freijah.
During the demonstration, a cartridge exploded and the bullet penetrated Lindsay’s upper left arm.
Luckily, there was no bone injury, and the wound was not considered serious.
A court of enquiry was convened, and the incident was ruled accidental.
Lindsay left Kantara (Suez), bound for Australia, aboard the HT Ulimaroa in March 1919, and returned to Wagga in May 1919.
He died on September 4, 1965 at Gunnedah, NSW (aged 73). He is listed on the Victory Memorial Arch, Wagga.
