AGE will be no barrier for participants in the annual state trap carnival at Wagga this weekend.
NSW Clay Target Association (NSWCTA) will hold its annual state trap carnival as the Tasman Road national grounds this long weekend where almost 300 competitors plus their families are expected to converge on Wagga.
The top competitors will vie for the six state titles on offer plus the representative honours that are also up for grabs, while there will also be those participating that are relatively new to the sport.
NSWCTA executive member Janene Schiller said the competition is for all comers.
"One of the younger competitors will be 12 year old Jack Hunter from Orange area, Jack commenced competition earlier this year and enjoys attending events alongside his father," Schiller said.
"They are just one of the numerous family groups that will compete across the carnival. A quick glance across the nominations list confirms this and no doubt, there will be bragging rights up for grabs in a number of these families.
"There will also be a number of competitors that are aged 75 plus, the eldest being Ray Kearns from the Bega area, at 79 years. There is no stopping that competitive spirit and enjoyment factor.
"There is a great deal of camaraderie amongst the participants and many will use the state trap carnival as an opportunity to catch up with old friends."
Several current and past state, national and world champions have nominated for the Wagga event with a mix of local, statewide and interstate competitors.
The event's opening ceremony will recognise two new members, Tom Turner and John Sleightholme, into the NSWCTA Hall of Fame.
Turner, from Cessnock, represented Australia at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Sleightholme, from Tamworth, was a member of the 2012 Australian Clay Target representative team that won the teams event at the World Down the Line Championships in Wales.
The competition wil run from Saturday to Monday.
Teams events will feature among other events on Saturday, while the double barrel marathon will be the feature of Sunday.
Monday will see the final qualifying for the state representative positions in the afternoon.
A feature of this year's carnival will be a trade area.
"This year we're having a trade fair attached to it," Schiller said.
"It won't be huge but for people who are interested in the sport they can get their supplies and see what's out there."
Nominations for competition will be taken at the events office from 8.30am to 19am across the weekend.
