Academy Award winner Rush will join fellow Australian Miranda Otto and actors Ewen Leslie, Paul Schneider, Anna Torv, Odessa Young and Sam Neil in upcoming film The Daughter.
The film, based on film debutant Simon Stone's play of the same name, is a re imagining of Henkrik Ibsen's classic The Wild Duck.
The film, set in a dying logging town, has been filming in Sydney, but local shooting will begin soon in Tumut Shire.
Mayor Trina Thomson attributed Tumut's win to council's general manager Bob Stewart.
"This is an incredible opportunity for Tumut Shire and shows that international movies can be made in regional Australia," Councillor Thomson said.
"Bob Stewart did a lot of negotiating and worked extremely closely with producers."
Cr Thomson told the Advertiser it would be exciting to see the shire's name in the credits.
"Tumut Shire Council really worked hard, there were a few hurdles but it worked out," Cr Thomson said.
The film focuses on the life of a dysfunctional family set in a dying-logging town.
The drama centres on the lead-up to the father's (Rush) second marriage.
His son (Schneider) discovers a family secret thatleads him to try to mend the family's previous wrong-doings.
Film producer Fate Films is incredibly excited to be working alongside Stone, a spokesperson said.
"We are delighted to be partnering with Simon whose work we have admired for some time, as well as an exceptional cast and crew to bring this truly emotional and resonant story to the screen."
The film has been backed by Roadshow Films.
Roadshow Films managing director Joel Pearlman praised the strong cast.
"Simon has achieved renown for his stage direction and we are thrilled to be supporting his entree into feature film directing, supported as he is, by the strongest possible production team and phenomenal ensemble cast."
Filming in Tumut Shire begins in coming weeks.
