The road, which links the Hume and Snowy Mountains highways between Gundagai and Tumut, is listed as a "hot spot" on NRMA's 2014 Seeing Red on Roads survey, conducted in July this year.
Gocup Road's prominence among responses from disgruntled western NSW NRMA members did not shock Gundagai mayor Abb McAlister yesterday.
"No, it doesn't surprise me," he said.
"I would agree with the survey."
Councillor McAlister believes the road is not up to standard to accommodate the number of heavy vehicles that use it each day.
"There are certain areas where the road surface is very bad," he said.
"It needs a lot more spent on it."
That sentiment was echoed by Tumut mayor Trina Thomson.
"There needs to be continual funding," she said.
Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire said Gocup Road was a priority for the government.
"It's at the tip of our tongue," he said.
"There's people working on the road today.
"You can give no more of a commitment than having guys on the road doing the job."
Councillor Thomson acknowledged that the road's surface was a problem but believes there are other issues of conern, such as heavy vehicle use and there being no overtaking lanes on the road.
"As with any survey and result you can only truly appreciate the result when you see it in context of the whole survey," she said.
"We will take every opporutnity to raise our concerns (about Gocup Road)."
NRMA director Graham Blight said politicians should pay attention to the motorists' responses, revealed yesterday.
"The Australian government and NSW government should take note of these results and focus on fixing the roads our members have voted as the worst in western NSW," he said.
"We will use the data to lobby both sides of politics in the lead-up to the 2015 state election and hopefully, more money to fix western NSW roads will filter to our region next year."
