The attack, which left a male sergeant dazed and momentarily winded, has prompted a public appeal for information to track down two people Wagga police say were responsible.
Officers were called to the Zeigler Avenue party late on Saturday night after a number of complaints - including for poor behaviour and erratic driving - were received from the public.
Wagga police acting crime manager Sandy Green said, after the party was shut down about 1am on Sunday, officers found two young females fighting in the street and went to intervene.
"One of the females hit him (the officer) in the forehead with a bottle," acting Inspector Green said.
As the sergeant and another officer struggled to contain the woman, Inspector Green said a young male struck him from behind near the left shoulder blade.
The officers called for urgent assistance when the situation began to escalate.
"Police were surrounded by revellers, with one person standing on the roof of the police car," she said.
The injured officer didn't require hospital treatment and Inspector Green said police had classed the attack as a "king-hit in a public place from behind".
"He (the sergeant) was slightly dazed from the hit to the forehead and momentarily winded from the strike to the back," she said.
"They (the offenders) will be dealt with the long arm of the law.
"Police are not going to put up with people being unruly ... let alone assaulting an officer.
"It's clear their behaviour shows a lack of respect to their fellow community members and a lack of respect for the law.
"Certainly, it won't be tolerated."
