JUST like his team, Collingullie-Ashmont-Kapooka's Matt Beckmans came to life in the second half.
The Demons midfielder claimed the Ron Hutchins Medal after being judged best-on-ground in his second season with the club.
His two last quarter goals were the highlight, but his effort throughout the game rotating through the midfield and half-forward gave him the edge over club stalwart Brad Aiken.
Beckmans was given two three votes to finish two votes ahead of the Jim Quinn Medal winner.
The 24-year-old's two goals happened in the blink of an eye and extended the Demons lead from two points to 14, 16 minutes into the final term.
He marked and goaled from 50 metres out before bursting through the pack from a free kick advantage from the resulting centre ball up to run in and score his second.
His goals proved to be the difference late in the ends as CAK ran out 13-point winners over Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes.
Although proud of the two medals hanging around his neck, the quietly spoken 24-year-old preferred to focus on the team's rather than his own.
"It's a team game and everyone played well and to get the first flag in the RFL is something pretty special," he said.
"There was some pretty special performances late in the last quarter."
The heartbreak of losing last year's grand final to Coolamon was part of Beckmans motivation for the game.
"It's almost vindication because we really had to pull something out of the bag (yesterday)," he said.
"It hurts for a full year and you don't want the same thing to happen, so I'm just happy to come away with the flag."
The Turvey Park junior returned to play in the RFL last year due to his friendship with Matt Lewington.
Drafted by the Swans in 2007, Beckmans played in the SANFL and the NEAFL in Canberra before travelling to Wagga each week while completing his law degree.
Moving back to Wagga in June, Beckmans' playing future will depend on where he can gain permanent employment.
