Relay for Life is the Cancer Council's foremost fund-raising event and sees teams relay around Parramore Park, with each team having its own campsite where it can sell raffle tickets and activities.
Live entertainment is to be played throughout the day, with an "emotion-filled" ceremony of remembrance and ending in a spectacular fireworks display.
About $280,000 was raised for the city's cancer support groups last year. Organisers are hoping to register more teams and participants to push higher than last year's efforts.
The recently elected chair of the Relay for Life committee Daniel Kisela - of The Good Guys Wagga - said 92 teams have so far registered for this year's event.
"We're up on figures from last year so we're very close to breaking last year's record," he said.
"Being involved with relay for the past two years, I've seen behind the scenes what happens, so hopefully with a great committee behind me, we'll pull for a really good 2014 Relay for Life."
According to the Cancer Council, more than 40,000 people take part in Relay For Life across the state.
Cancer Council community engagement manager Pip Grant said the event attracted a variety of teams, including "memorial" teams.
"It's such a cathartic event within a celebration," she said.
"It's a really good way for people to remember those that they have lost."
Relay for Life is on from October 11 to 12. To register for Relay for Life, visit relayforlife.org.au.
