Also missing from two crime scenes established at the Boree Creek property is the weapon believed to have inflicted the fatal injuries on Kim Hunt, 41, and her three children Fletcher, 10, Mia, eight, and Phoebe, six.
Superintendent Bob Noble, commander of the Wagga LAC, fronted media outside the Wagga station on Wednesday morning.
While there was little new information, Supt Noble outlined what the newly-formed strike force had in their sights as they sift through a evidence at the grisly scene.
Police would not elaborate any further on speculation a suicide note was found, and revealed that a weapon has not yet been located at either of the two crime scenes that have been established on the property.
The focus is now firmly on locating the missing man, Supt Noble said.
Police divers will target the property's waterways, with emphasis on a dam where the vehicle believed to belong to Geoff Hunt was located on Tuesday.
"There's a lot of work to be done there are a lot of witnesses that we wish to speak to in relation to the lead-up to this event, what might have caused this tragedy, in the meantime our focus does remain on finding that 44-year-old man," Supt Noble said.
"There is a dam some distance - within sight of the homestead - (and) there is a vehicle believed to belong to the male that we're seeking that was parked right near that dam, so that's a particular focus for us this morning.
"We'll be conducting a ground search with personnel on foot, and divers are on the way from Sydney to make a thorough search of that dam. Polair is on its way as well to assist in whatever respect they're able to. That is a focus for us this morning."
The scene police and paramedics were confronted with on Tuesday is has been described as "horrific".
It's understood Mrs Hunt was found just on a footpath outside the homestead, while the three children were inside the house. All suffered what is police believe are gunshot wounds.
It's a horrific scene. I don't think even the most hardened professional could remain unmoved by what's out there, what was there at the time ... it's certainly not something that I've encountered similar to before, and hope not to ever again.
- Superintendent Bob Noble
The family, which has been described by Lockhart mayor Peter Yates as "a well-respected farming family" was not one on the radar of local police.
"At this stage all I can say is it's not a residence that was of particular concern to us," Supt Noble said.
"These people were well integrated with the Lockhart and Boree Creek communities, and obviously that being the case, it's going to send quite a shockwave through those little communities and throughout the whole area."
The search will continue on "Watch Hill", a "relatively large" cropping operation on the Lockhart-Boree Creek road, 80 kilometres west of Wagga.
