Sydney Thunder officials gathered on Tuesday to watch the lowering of the 35-tonne, legend couch grass pitch.

General manager Nick Cummins said the most important thing was for it to be flat, hard and fast.

"Particularly for T20, the faster the pitch, the quicker it comes off the bat, so the more runs there are and that makes everyone happy," he said.

Sydney Thunder will play two matches next season at the smaller stadium while the Asian Cup football tournament takes place at ANZ Stadium.

The steel trays of the pitch were transported from Victoria and filled with local soil and grass on site at the Sydney Showground, where it has been growing for the past month.

Cummins said that, unlike other stadiums that hold drop-in pitches, Spotless Stadium will have a lengthy period to allow the $70,000 pitch to settle in.

"The drop-in pitch at the MCG will go in after the AFL grand final, so that's the start of October and they've got to start using it in November, December," he said.

"This is going in early September and we won't use it till January, so we can roll it and roll it to get it as flat and fast as possible."

While it is the Asian Cup that has pushed Thunder's move to Spotless Stadium, it could become a more permanent site as their venue hire agreement at ANZ Stadium ends this year.

Spotless Stadium's 24,000 seat capacity is a significant downsize from the 84,000 of ANZ Stadium and, while excited, Cummins said they are yet to see how it may affect Thunder fans.

"The downside is that we could really cap our growth and that is a clear disadvantage. The upside is it will be a fantastic atmosphere as our average crowd is about 15,000," he said.

He said the smaller site will definitely bring an "intimacy" to the game.

"The seats at Spotless are actually further away than at ANZ, but it has a cauldron design rather than a bowl design, so it creates a feeling of being closer," he said.

Sydney Showground curator Terry O'Keeffe has been the guardian of the pitch in the past month and will oversee its development, referring to the legend couch pitch as "his baby".

"I'm very happy," O'Keeffe said. "You could see all the roots coming through the base of it as it was going in, which is a great sign."

Going in, the grass of the pitch was about 20 millimetres but O'Keeffe said the aim will be to thin it out.

"Obviously we don't want all that bounce, that sort of rubbish in the top of the surface. So we'll use a vertical blade and eventually it will be down to 3 or 4 millimetres for match day."
