THE tight-knit community of Lake Cargelligo is preparing to rally behind bubbly toddler Coby Davies, a brave youngster fighting a battle no child should ever endure.

On August 21 the small town community was shocked to learn Coby had been diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer known as Wilms' tumour.

Most commonly found in newborns and young children, the cancer does not typically cause young patients to show any symptoms prior to their diagnosis.

In the difficult days following her diagnosis, Coby underwent an operation to remove a large tumour and her right kidney.

“The tumour weighed a kilogram when it was removed,” Coby’s loving grandmother Nichole Hately said.

“The tumour had latched onto her right kidney and it had completely died off. We have no idea how long Coby had been going with only one functioning kidney.

“Tomorrow the pathology tests should be back, and we will know what stage of cancer the tumour was. There are four of five different stages for this type of tumour.”

With the tumour removed, Coby’s mother Shae Hately and father Glenn Davies are now preparing to support their daughter through months of gruelling chemotherapy.

“Even though the tumour has been removed, they can not say Coby is cancer-free yet,” Nichole said.

“She will now start chemotherapy, possibly tomorrow, and they are waiting to see if she will need radiation... Hopefully she won’t.

“Shae and Glenn will soon move into the Ronald McDonald House near Randwick Children’s Hospital where Coby could have the chemotherapy for up to six to seven months.

“Her doctor, Professor Glenn Marshall, does hope that when she gets down to one or two week periods (of chemotherapy) that they might be able to fly her in and out on Angel Flight so she can be at home.”

In what is testament to Coby’s remarkable strength and resilience, the only sign of her battle is the portacath installed in preparation for her chemotherapy.

“She is an amazing little girl,” Nichole said.

“She has been on morphine, but yesterday she went all day on only Pandaol.

“She is a tough little thing.”

Nichole said her family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support they has received since Coby’s diagnosis.

“It is just wonderful; you wouldn't want to live anywhere else because you know how much people care,” she said.

People across the Riverina also have the opportunity to join the Lake Cargelligo community in supporting Coby and her family through the harrowing journey.

The town will host a Family Fun Day on November 1 that will feature a Lake Lap Fun Run, Golf Day and raffles.

Organisers are currently seeking potential sponsors to come on board and lend their support to the event.
