Latu was judged best on field in the Blacks win over the Steamers on Saturday, but was a later addition to the team this season.

Having a big impact on the team that's won nine-straight to take the title, Latu had to chose one of two finals to play in on Saturday.

Latu has been playing for the Blacks on Saturdays and Group 20 team Darlington Point-Coleambally on Sundays, but when the two teams clashed he was forced to make a tough decision.

Until Saturday he'd only missed one game for the Roosters all season, but decided to play in the grand final instead of the elimination semi-final against Hay.

A front rower in rugby league, Latu said he and the club had come to an understanding and would be available to play next weekend after the Roosters' win.

Latu said the effort done at training, and the closeness of the Blacks team as a big part of their charge to the premiership.

"It was a big end, but it was all because of the boys turning up to training and being committed when it counts," he said.

"We know that everyone has each other's backs and were going to be alright."

The Blacks won their first four games, before losing four straight and haven't been defeated since.

The experienced Michael Stalley collected the Blacks' silverware and said the "slump" paid dividends in the end.

"We started training an extra night a week, putting in at training and the results showed from there," he said.

"We didn't lose another game and came in with winning form.

"And the winning form allowed us to believe in what we had to do to ... and get over the line."
