In a break from the usual method of pinpointing the top achiever in a football competition, Football Wagga polled the respective coaches to
settle on the winner.
Football Wagga president Erwin Budde yesterday revealed a short list of contenders had been drawn up with the winner to be announced at a function at Wagga RSL Club tonight.
Budde said the player of the year award was the top gong up for grabs at the event.
"There will be quite a few awards," Budde said.
"It should be a great evening."
With the Football Wagga player of the year title set to be the highlight, the presentation function will also honour the best referee in the premiership and the coach of the year in the men's and women's competitions.
Budde said the naming of the respective Football Wagga men and women's teams of the year would also be a major talking point at the ceremony.
"I'm sure it will create a lot of interest," he said.
Significantly, Budde said the player of the year award would revert to a more universal system in 2015.
"We'll go back to the way it was," Budde said.
Next year it is expected referees will lodge votes after each game, with a count to be conducted at the end of the season.
Budde, meantime, yesterday confirmed the Football Wagga first grade grand final would be staged at Equex Centre on September 14.
"The reaction has been very positive," Budde said.
The Football Wagga president said Wagga Rugby League and Wagga City Council were "very happy" to accommodate the soccer decider at the venue.
Despite Football Wagga being eager to utilise Equex Centre for other "major" games, Budde is adamant soccer will not "impose or impede" rugby league at the venue.
Football Wagga remains determined to strive to lure an A-League pre-season trial game to Wagga in the near future.
"That's the dream," Budde said.
Any A-League promotions would be played at Equex Centre after the finish of the Group Nine season.
