CRICKET NSW development officer Luke Olsen has poured water on the controversy surrounding the ICC World Cup final bye fiasco.
Discussion was sparked a week ago when Wagga Cricket Association (WCA) operations manager Grant Geaghan revealed Cricket Australia (CA) had requested all local competitions take a general bye on the weekend of March 28-29.
CA believes the move will help generate a crowd at the ICC World Cup grand final in Melbourne on the Sunday.
It was suggested WCA would have to postpone its own grand final to appease CA.
But Olsen - development officer for Murrumbidgee - says the governing body hasn't been dishing out orders to local competitions.
"Cricket Australia made a suggestion but it certainly wasn't a directive," Olsen explained.
"No one wants to rule with an iron fist, that's not the case at all.
"Cricket Australia simply suggested, to every association in the country, that they could consider taking that weekend off.
"The idea is to maximise the chances for people to attend the World Cup.
"No one should have to make a choice between their local grand final and seeing the World Cup.
"It could be a once in a generation opportunity so obviously Cricket Australia wants as many people to attend the games as possible."
WCA has been asked to consider the World Cup fixture when finalising its draw for the upcoming cricket season.
There are other World Cup games - in Sydney and Canberra - that WCA could consider taking a general bye to give Wagga enthusiasts every possible chance of attending a game.
It also needs to take into account the Sheffield Shield game scheduled for Robertson Oval in February.
Geaghan is in the process of compiling a draw, which will be put to a committee meeting on Monday, September 1.
Meantime, Olsen is preparing for a big summer of cricket in the Murrumbidgee region.
Wagga and surrounding towns will be treated to a visit from some NSW Blues cricketers during September to kick things off.
