The awards, organised by the Rotary Club of Wagga Sunrise, allow the public to acknowledge outstanding acts of kindness, compassion, courage and devotion to duty by any male, female, uniform or plain clothes, office staff or volunteers, of the NSW police service in the Wagga LAC.

Rotary club of Wagga president and organising committee chair Jo Wilson said police officer of the year awards had been organised under Rotary elsewhere in NSW for years, but it was a first for our LAC.

"I am impressed by the number of nominations and so are the police, they're really pleased," she said.

The awards will culminate in a gala presentation evening, which is open to the public, on Saturday, August 30 at Wagga RSL.

A panel of Rotarians and two senior police officers will determine the award winners across different categories: the overall police officer of the year award, field operations in the LAC, specialist operations/ corporate services outside the LAC, Rotary community award, Rotary volunteer of the year award and the Rotary police employee of the year.

All nominees will be presented with a certificate before category winners are awarded a plaque.

The overall winner, who'll be handed a perpetual trophy to be kept at the Wagga police station, will progress to the state police awards later this year.

Wagga Superintendent Bob Noble and Ms Wilson will speak at the awards.

"Police often don't get recognised for all the good work they do," Ms Wilson said.

"The awards show what people have to say so I'd love to see them get along for support."

The function is open to the public and a $65 ticket will buy you a three-course meal, complimentary drink on arrival and live entertainment in the Wagga police band called Bail Refused.
