WAGGA marathon runner Jonathan Bleasel reserved the result of last year to claim his first Trail Marathon victory.
About 450 competitors took to a wet and muddy Wagga Trail Marathon course last Sunday where Bleasel made the most of a little bit of luck to claim the city's premier long-distance event.
Bleasel was trailing last year's winner Mick Donges when he slipped in the wet conditions.
Bleasel was able to hit the front and hold off Donges to claim the win in a time of two hours, 48 minutes and 14 seconds.
Donges recocovered to finish second, a little over two minutes behind.
It was a case of persistance paying off for Bleasel after he finished second behind Donges in last year's Trail Marathon.
Donges is an acclaimed ultra-marathon runner from the Blue Mountains and won last year's event in a time one minute quicker than Bleasel's time on Sunday.
Bleasel, 24, is originally from Sydney but it based in Wagga.
He ran a similar time to last year but given the conditions, it was an improved effort.
Wagga's Rob Sharpe came home in third, 29 minutes behind Donges.
Samantha Isbell was the first female home in three hours, 44 minutes and 48 seconds.
Wagga's Steven Priest was another standout competitior, coming home in fifth place overall and winning the 40-49 years category.
Wagga Road Runners were well represented throughout the different runs.
Sharpe, a Wagga Road Runner member and event organiser, said it was a strong showing from the local athletes.
"There were some great results from our junior runners," he said.
"The future is looking bright."
Other Wagga Road Runner members to excel were Sonia Metcalfe, who was the second female home in the marathon.
Jared Kahlefeldt was second in the half marathon.
Hamish Hart won the five kilometre run.
