KOORINGAL has turned to a favourite son for a helping hand as the Colts aim to regain their status as a Wagga cricket powerhouse.
Premiership winning player Andrew Dutton has returned as co-coach of his beloved Colts, slotting into the role alongside Ben Tett.
Dutton, now 24, played with the club through juniors and won two titles before jetting off to England in 2012.
He has spent the past two years living and playing cricket and rugby overseas, but now VISA regulations have sent him home to Wagga where he is back working.
"I was always going to come back to the Colts at some stage," Dutton explained.
"Coaching wasn't really considered in the near future, but the opportunity was there and I'm keen to give it a go."
Kooringal missed out on playing cricket finals by a whisker last season and Dutton's preliminary mission is simple - get the Colts back in the top four.
"I know the boys were on the verge of playing finals last season and just missed out, so obviously we want to push for finals this year," Dutton said.
"There's still a core group of people around the club but there's a lot of guys I haven't played with, so I'm looking forward to meeting everyone."
Dutton and Tett will have basically the same list as last season to work with.
Experienced top order batsman Dave Bolton and young paceman Luke Hillier joined the club earlier this year and will bolster the squad.
Keenan Hanigan is expected to get the nod as captain again, while Wagga cricket legend Warren Smith will continue to work alongside the Colts' coaching staff in a consultant capacity.
Kooringal president Brenton Crawford is rapt with how the season is taking shape.
"Things are looking good," Crawford said.
"Obviously we want all grades to play finals but getting first grade back in finals will be our main focus."
Crawford hinted the club is chasing "a couple" of talented players from outside Wagga, but was keen not to give away too much detail.
The Colts plan to begin training in mid-September as Dutton officially assumes his role as co-coach.
The club has organised a trial game against the Robbie Jackson-led Wodonga for the October long weekend.
Meantime, Wagga Cricket Association is yet to release its official draw for the 2014-15 season.
