HENWOOD Park coach Ben Schmid says a win over Junee tomorrow would give the Hawks a serious mental edge heading into the business end of the Football Wagga season.
Henwood Park is facing the possibility of playing the Jaguars three times in the coming month.
The two clubs will meet tomorrow, and again in a fortnight during the split round-robin draw.
A third meeting during finals is almost inevitable, as they currently sit third and fourth on the ladder respectively.
Schmid is desperate to get the wood on Junee early with a victory this weekend.
"It would give us a massive mental edge before finals, that's for sure," Schmid said.
"We beat them 5-0 earlier in the year but I think they have improved a fair bit since then.
"Junee is coming off a good result, a draw against Tolland last week, so they will be fairly strong and it's important we make sure to get on top early.
"They are stringing some good football together so we know it won't be easy."
"It would give us a massive mental edge before finals..."
- Ben Schmid
Henwood Park rolled Junee easily last time the clubs met but Schmid is warning his players not to rest on their laurels.
"We need to be strong through defence because (Junee) are a good attacking side," he said.
"We need to keep the ball off them if we can."
The Hawks will need to shuffle their defensive line around thanks to the untimely loss of two crucial players.
Matt Takats and Leigh Hutchinson will sit out the clash injured.
Takats, a centre back, copped a bad knock on the shin last week while Hutchinson, a left back, is struggling to overcome some ongoing issues with his knee.
To fill the holes, young gun Will Thompson returns to the team and Dale Schmid is expected to run out a full game.
Dale Schmid returned from a broken hand to play reserve grade last week and backed up to play 20 minutes in first grade.
"It's still broken but Dale was pretty keen to get back out there," the coach said.
Henwood Park will spend the next four weeks battling with fellow Pascoe Cup contenders Junee, Tolland and Wagga United.
Each of the four clubs will play each other once when the competition splits next week, before beginning the finals campaign on August 31.
"It will be interesting to see what mental games the results play before finals," Schmid said.
