A tip-truck travelling north carrying three people collided with a prime mover driving in the opposite direction at 7.20pm on Houlaghans Creek Bridge on Coolamon Road about 10km north of Wagga.
Wagga police inspector Peter McLay said yesterday the three people were trapped in the tip-truck for more than an hour before the 16-year-old L-plate driver, Anastazia Carroll, and 16-year-old passenger, Dylan Rowley, were freed by emergency crews.
The supervisor and passenger in the tip-truck, who was Anastazia's father and Dylan's uncle, Clinton Rowley, 38, died at the scene.
Mr McLay said ambulance crews, volunteer rescue, Fire and Rescue NSW, and other emergency services were involved in the recovery.
Dylan was flown to St George Hospital in Sydney in a critical condition.
Anastazia was taken to Wagga Base Hospital but was scheduled to be transferred to St George hospital in a serious condition. Mr McLay said the family were from Mt Austin.
The driver of the prime mover, 28-year-old Scott Dawson from San Isidore, was not seriously injured.
He was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for observation and tests, but was released shortly after.
Mr McLay could not elaborate on the cause of the accident at the time of printing.
"Investigations are continuing," he said.
"Speed was not considered a factor.
"We haven't spoken to the two young people involved yet obviously."
The Coolamon Road was closed in both directions with diversions put in place through Collingullie, Marrar and Old Junee for about nine hours and re-opened in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Mr Rowley was a keen drag-racer and qualified mechanic, who was due to start a new job on Wednesday.
* An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the two young people involved in the fatal crash on Tuesday night, Dylan Rowley and Anastazia Carroll, were the son and stepdaughter of the man who died, 38-year-old Clinton Rowley. The information was supplied to us by police.
We would like to clarify Dylan was the nephew of Clinton and Anastazia was the daughter of Clinton.
