A MAN who bailed up a hotel bottle shop attendant with a knife and was then chased down by two women has an IQ of just 49, Wagga District Court has been told.
Grant Andrew Churchin, 22, on Wednesday adhered to previous pleas of guilty to assault with intent to rob (while) armed with an offensive weapon and two counts of assaulting police.
Armed with a boning knife, Churchin went to the Kooringal Hotel bottle shop just after 6pm on September 24 last year and demanded money from the attendant.
But he was disarmed by two female customers.
One of them, Lisa Curtis, then chased a fleeing Churchin.
He was found by police near the hotel a short time later.
Churchin spat at one police officer during his arrest and spat at another officer at the police station.
Churchin appeared for a sentencing hearing before Judge Stephen Norrish on Wednesday, but the matter was adjourned after just a few minutes.
Churchin's legal representative Michael King said he wanted access to psychological reports on Churchin that were prepared while he was in the prison system.
He said he also wanted information from the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care about supported accommodation for Churchin once he was released from jail.
Mr King said Churchin was not unable to live in the community unassisted.
He said Churchin had an IQ of 49.
Judge Norrish granted a short service subpoena for the psychological reports and adjourned the case for mention until next Monday.
While reading the agreed facts on the case, Judge Norrish noted the actions of Ms Curtis in chasing Churchin.
"A very brave person," the judge said.
