At Wagga Base Hospital, the food and hotel services departments pride themselves on delivering good food to hundreds of patients every day and keeping the hospital clean to assist in recovery.

The long service of 10 staff members who have worked at the hospital for 20 years or more was recognised on Wednesday with a special morning tea and the presentation of certificates.

Some staff, including Vicki Ray who has given 22 years' service to the catering department, have adapted to massive change in the way meals are prepared at the hospital over the years.

When Mrs Ray first started, meals were prepared from scratch; then came cook-chill and now there is a system known as cold plating.

"It was lovely just to be recognised," Mrs Ray said of the celebration.

She said what she like best about her work was mixing with hospital patients.

"I love the patients," Mrs Ray said.

The 10 staff recognised for their long service have worked a combined 258 years at Wagga Base Hospital.

"They are a great bunch to work with," said catering supervisor, Helen McKenzie.

"We supply 620 meals a day to patients, as well as morning tea, afternoon tea and supper.

"It's pretty full on."

She said the long service of the 10 workers was indicative of a good work environment they did not want to leave.

"Christine (Stuart) started when she was 20 years old and has not left," Mrs McKenzie said.
