The Greenfreight B-double was northbound on the Hume Highway, north of Tumblong, when the fire erupted about 12.30am.
The Daily Advertiser has been told the male driver, from Wodonga, heard a noise and saw sparks coming from the vehicle.
He managed to stop in a parking bay and grabbed a fire extinguisher, but little could be done to douse the flames.
A firefighter, who was at the scene, said the man was lucky to escape without injury, as the truck's fuel tank had "popped".
The driver managed to detach the trailers from the cabin.
