A HEARTFELT tale of anguish and relief from a father whose daughter was afflicted by leukaemia was fitting launch to the social event of the spring, the Wagga picnics charity race day.

Past sponsors and supporters of the Wagga picnics were at the Riverine Club on Wednesday night to hear from Adam Roberts, whose daughter Zoe was diagnosed with cancer three years ago.
Mr Roberts and his family were assisted throughout the terrible ordeal by Riverina charity Country Hope as Zoe was treated at the Sydney Children's Hospital.
The Wagga picnics has donated nearly $350,000 to Country Hope since 2003.
The picnics committee donated another $10,000 to Country Hope on Wednesday night in addition to $30,000 in November last year.
President Simon Playfair said the donation could not have been achieved without the terrific support of long-term race sponsors and charity club supporters.
"Adam's amazing story really hit home what a fantastic job Country Hope do for families with children affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses," Mr Playfair said.
"To hear first-hand the emotional trauma a family can experience virtually overnight when a child is diagnosed with cancer reinforces the importance of making sure the picnics is a success so we can continue to support Country Hope."
Zoe, now 8, has recovered from leukaemia and is attending school.
The Wagga picnic races will be held on the long weekend, Saturday, October 4.
