Firefighters, police and ambulance responded to the fire on the corner of Tobruk and Madang streets shortly after 8pm.
The victim was treated by paramedics on the footpath outside of his house before being taken to Wagga Base Hospital.
The man had superficial burns to his lower limbs, back, face and head.
"If his airway swells up he's in a great deal of trouble," NSW Ambulance district operations manager Eamon Purcell said at the scene.
The blaze was extinguished by three crews from Turvey Park and Wagga fire stations.
Fire and Rescue NSW duty commander Inspector John Pall said: "At this stage we have no reason to believe there have been any suspicious circumstances."
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing an explosion before the fire broke out.
Investigations are continuing.
