But in the era of clashing ideas, there was an idea so profound it would forever change the landscape of American muscle.
The Mustang was born.
"This was the first car that was built beginning to end as a muscle car," says Trevor Chapman, who is the co-ordinator of the newly established Riverina chapter of the Mustang Owners Club of Australia (MOCA).
"There is something about it that ticks all the boxes. It's had a following from day one.
"The number of cars that they have sold is phenomenal."
Mr Chapman is the proud owner of a '66 model Mustang and is among a growing group of Riverina residents taking up ownership of the iconic car.
About six months ago, Mr Chapman grouped all Riverina members of MOCA.
"We've got about a dozen members and have another six or eight who are talking of joining," he said.
"It gives us scope to get involved with people all over the country."
MOCA Riverina is inviting all car enthusiasts for a meeting at 10am on April 27 at Bolton Park.
