About 11.30am, a number of police officers from Wagga and Lockhart stations along with NSW Ambulance Service paramedics descended on a Scott Street house following reports a man was in cardiac arrest.
On arrival, police and ambulance officers performed CPR for 45 minutes but the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene just after noon.
A spokeswoman for the NSW Ambulance Service said initial reports indicated the man had fallen and was in a critical condition.
However, a NSW Police spokeswoman said investigations would continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with all deaths being treated as "suspicious" until foul play can be ruled out.
For part of the day police cordoned off Scott Street, spending the afternoon interviewing nearby residents.
Yesterday evening, a NSW Police spokeswoman was unable to confirm if anyone had been arrested or charged in relation to the death.
A steady flow of tributes started to pour out of The Rock community by neighbours who knew the man whose name is yet to be released.
He is believed to have been active in several community groups.
Police will now prepare a brief for the coroner.
