Reverend Rob Gillion, currently serving as a priest in a London diocese, was elected to become the 10th Bishop of Riverina on Friday following a unanimous decision by the Riverina synod.
The Riverina diocese takes in communities to the west of Wagga, from Coolamon and The Rock to the South Australian border.
Archdeacon of Riverina Edwin Byfield said the dioeese was excited about Mr Gillion's impending arrival to take up his role as its bishop.
"He will be a great asset for the Diocese of Riverina," he said.
Mr Gillion has taken up a number of roles within the Anglican Church, including leading a congregation in Hong Kong during the 1990s and a variety of positions back in England.
Prior to becoming ordained within the Anglican Church, Mr Gillion worked in the theatre industry and has brought many of those skills across to his career within the church.
The wide-ranging pedigree that Mr Gillion brings to the role will be a boost to the Riverina diocese, according to Dr Byfield.
"He took a nearly non-existent church in London and has changed it into a very active church now," Dr Byfield said.
"It'll be a very wonderful time for the diocese I think."
Mr Gillion will be consecrated as the Bishop of Riverina at St Albans Cathedral in Griffith on August 15.
