The time has come to decide which parts of the ABC are essential to Australian life. These need to be retained, and the rest sold, or closed.
The Federal Budget has a massive deficit. Joe Hockey has to find $1.15 billion each year to maintain the ABC, and this figure is growing. Four Wagga Base hospitals could be built, each year, for $1.15 billion. Any party that promised to spend just half of that $1.15 billion on new hospital buildings, and the rest on the backlog of “elective” surgery, would be on a winner.
If you think I’m complaining about the political bias on the ABC, or even the continual campaigning on favourite ABC topics like climate change or refugee boats, then you’d only have half the picture.
Let’s consider the rubbish served up on ABC2, now that it is programmed to attract a “younger” audience. Certainly there are interesting programs like Seconds from Disaster, but it’s the filthy content which draws into question the judgement of ABC management.
A week ago I was in Ballarat with a group of mates, visiting the Ballarat Swap. We returned from our dinner and drinks at the nearest pub, and turned on the television. Scrolling through the channels, we stopped abruptly at the scene on an ABC2 show, where this character was saying he liked having sex with his car.
Now you might ask why we didn’t simply turn to another channel if we found the content so offensive. Well, as taxpayers, we thought it was worth scrutiny, because if this is the sort of rubbish that the ABC supports, there is a very clear case for funding cuts at the ABC in the May budget.
The program was called My Car is My Lover, we discovered at the end. Management must have thought this was a really good show, because it was repeated a few nights later and uploaded to iView for viewers that had missed out.
The content featured such “entertaining” sequences as this weirdo masturbating on his car, in his mate’s car, on a neighbour’s car, and so on. Just because you think this is disgusting, don’t stop reading. Ask yourself what we should be doing about this situation.
Ponder why the ABC keeps demanding more and more of our money to expand its services, if this sort of tripe is the best that our taxes can buy.
Examine the ABC2 schedule for yourself. Most of us would be unlikely to watch ABC2, so the questionable characters who run the programming on ABC2 can continue expanding this type of depravity, without criticism.
If you don’t believe how low “Our ABC” has sunk, go to iView and watch this program. Then ask yourself why Joe Hockey shouldn’t at least halve the ABC’s funding in May’s federal budget.
