LEETON trainer-driver Wayne Sullivan admits his chances of a maiden MIA Breeders Plate victory have taken a serious hit after having to trial Sports Chaton twice over the weekend.
The popular hometown hope was forced to re-qualify at the trials after he galloped at the opening turn when finishing second as the $1.10 favourite in Thursday night's heat.
Sports Chaton trialled at Leeton on Saturday but galloped at the first turn again so Sullivan was forced to back the horse up at Coolamon yesterday morning where he successfully got around without issue and re-qualified.
Sullivan will now push on to Wednesday night's $25,000 Southern Engineering MIA Breeders Plate Final (1758m) at Leeton, where Sports Chaton has come up with gate three.
Sydney visitor Making Headlines will start from the outside of the front row in gate six, while fellow Leeton chance Rich Virgin has come up with the prized gate one.
Sullivan was relieved yesterday that Sports Chaton re-qualified but conceded the two trials had hurt his chances of Breeders Plate success with Sports Chaton.
"I think it has, you can't kid yourself," Sullivan said.
"He's had to do a bit more than the others.
"I can't change anything, we're just going to have to have a think about things and what we plan on doing."
While disappointed with the events of the past few days, Sullivan has not given up hope of victory.
"It's a setback that has just snowballed a little bit," Sullivan said.
"With the right bit of luck he's a chance.
"He's probably not as good a chance as he was before the heat but anyway.
"You don't know with these races how they're going to pan out. We'll just wait and see."
A week ago, Sports Chaton was the raging hot favourite to take out the series but the events of the last week has now put a serious question mark over the Leeton two-year-old.
Sullivan has been trying to win the Breeders Plate for 30 years and finished second in 1982 with Chaton Butler.
He had the favourite Wave To Goola in 1986 but ironically, it galloped and ruined its chances.
Sports Chaton went to the front and won yesterday's trial at Coolamon.
Sullivan said Sports Chaton would have an easy couple of days as he tries to freshen the horse up for Wednesday night's final.
