Firefighters are on stand-by to rescue two window washers who became stranded on the side of a high-rise building in Parramatta.

The window washers could be seen dangling on a platform outside the seventh floor of the Ferguson Centre on George Street in Parramatta on Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Ian Krimmer, from Fire and Rescue NSW, said firefighters were called to the building about 9.15am.

"Two window washers are stuck in what's called a window cleaning bucket. They've declined rescue, they think they can manually winch the device themselves," he said.

"We have an aerial platform ladder truck standing by to support them if required, but at this stage we're not rescuing them."

He said it was not clear how the bucket became stuck.
