A parishioner since 2001, Bede Mecham said the “small, friendly congregation” would be celebrating the milestone later this month.
“We’re having a service at 2pm on Sunday the 15th (of September),” he said.
“A thanksgiving service will be headed by Bishop Genieve (Blackwell).
“Following that we’ll have some afternoon tea in the hall.”
As well as this centenary event, the Anglican parish will introduce its “Space” program, an initiative that will open the church to younger families.
Located in St Luke’s Church Hall, Space is an indoor play area where children can play and parents and carers can have a bite to eat and a chat.
Also a Christian environment, Space will have time dedicated to prayer, stories and games based on Christian principles.
Co-ordinator and assisting minister to Father Michael Armstrong, Reverend Sue Hanna said the parish was “wanting the space to be an extension of what we’re doing in the church.”
“What the congregation values about St Luke’s is the close-knit relationships and that’s what we’re hoping to offer through Space,” she said.
Two new programs begin in term four and are based upon a “playgroup” model.
In its 100 years, St Luke’s has grown to include a hall and preschool that continues to serve Wagga with full enrolments.
Rector of the Anglican Parish of Wagga, Father Michael Armstong, said the church hoped to build on its proud history.
“The church was built at a time when not many churches were being built,” he said.
“It was built with a focus on family and children.
“A desire of the current congregation is on how we serve and care for families in South Wagga.”
