Police arrived in the western Riverina town yesterday after executing a search warrant for a residential property on Maude Road and last night confirmed the search was for the remains of Mr Mackay.
Griffith mayor, John Dal Broi, welcomed the news but remained wary given the early stages of the excavation.
"It's news, but at this stage there's been nothing other than a tip off to police," Cr Dal Broi said.
"The community are just waiting to see what happens.
"You wouldn't find anyone doesn't want the body to be found."
After numerous fruitless searches, Cr Dal Broi said the community just wanted closure.
"We would certainly like to see this come to some sort of finality, particularly for the Mackay family, some of who are still here in Griffith.
