The 63-year-old was riding his bike along Lockhart Road near Galore at 6.30am when he was hit from behind by the side mirror of a passing truck, according to police reports.
The impact of the collision saw Dr Mackey thrown into bushland by the side of road before being rushed to Wagga Base Hospital where he remained in intensive care unit yesterday.
The accident has triggered an outpouring of support from colleagues and the community of Lockhart, who have all wished Dr Mackey a speedy recovery.
"It's a shock to us all," Dr Paul Mara, of Gundagai, said.
"He's a colleague and a friend who has devoted nearly the entirety of his professional life to medicine in the bush he does an immense service."
The well-respected doctor was only honoured last December by the NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) for his 37 years practising medicine.
Lockhart Shire mayor Peter Yates said the whole community wished the doctor a quick recovery so they could see his "cheerful face" again.
"It's a distressing time for our entire community," Cr Yates said.
"But our thoughts remain with his family."
It is unclear if the driver of the truck will be charged.
After the accident the driver attended Griffith police station where he was assisting police with inquiries.
Mandatory blood and urine tests were conducted.
A spokesman for Wagga Local Area command yesterday confirmed investigations into the accident are continuing.
