NARRANDERA has moved to ensure it does not suffer from any kind of premiership hangover by becoming the first Riverina Football League club to hit the training track.
Just 50 days since its historic premiership success, Narrandera's quest for back-to-back flags got underway as the Eagles kicked off pre-season training on Tuesday night.
A mix of youth and experience were among the group of about 20 players that took to Narrandera Sportsground for the start of the club's 2013 campaign.
Narrandera's premiership co-coach Jim Rice said the November start was all about staying ahead of the pack.
"We're the yardstick now I suppose so we've got to keep on top of it," Rice said yesterday.
"We've got to make sure the other teams keep chasing us because they're obviously going to take notice of what we did last year.
"We wanted to get up and going to make sure we don't drop off."
Narrandera began its pre-season training at a similar time last season and Rice said the Eagles were keen to stick with the systems that worked.
"We might tweak it a bit," Rice said.
"We want to try and improve our performance as well.
"There will be changes to the game plan that require different skillsets.
"We'll try to be a little bit more flexible where we can go from one game plan to another in the confines of a game."
Narrandera is working hard to ensure it retains its premiership squad.
Midfielder Tim Mathieson is the only departure at this stage, joining Farrer League club The Rock-Yerong Creek.
The club is also hopeful talented teenager Zac Williams will be picked up in the upcoming AFL draft.
Powerful forward Andrew Johnston has already re-signed with the club, while Rice said the discussions with the Canberra-based players were "positive".
Rice also hopes Narrandera will be in a position to announce some new signings within the next fortnight.
Mark Flack will return from a knee injury and was on the track on Tuesday night.
