THIS year's Hillston Outback Triathlon is set to be the "biggest ever" according to event co-ordinator Robin Bartholomew.
The annual event will run for the 13th consecutive year when it is held early next month.
In the past, the unique triathlon has attracted many big-name athletes such as international competitor Aaron Farlow, as well as entrants from as far away as Sydney, Melbourne and Dubbo.
Event co-ordinator Robin Bartholomew says the preparations for this year are going well.
"(The triathlon) is shaping up pretty well, the numbers are good so far," said Bartholomew.
"People have been training for it and so on, so it looks like it will be bigger than the past.
"We are expecting about 150 competitors, in the past we have had about 100 to 120.
"It is definitely one of the town's biggest events on the calendar."
The small town, which holds a population of close to 1000, has been put on the triathlon map due to the success of the event in the past.
Bartholomew said the event is continuing to grow, despite difficulties with the swim leg in recent years.
"The only thing we would like to change is the swim leg being held in the pool," she said.
"It used to be in the lake, but because of the drought there isn't much water in there.
"It's hard swimming a triathlon in a 25-metre pool, but there is nowhere else to hold it.
"The event is absolutely getting bigger."
Bartholomew says they have already received entries from competitors from Sydney, Canberra and Leeton.
She said people like to get behind the triathlon because it is the only event like it in the region.
A cash prize of between $50 and $100 will be up for grabs, depending on the number of sponsors.
The day will include three race categories, a "micro triathlon" for young competitors, a "mini-race", and the main event the "sprint race" for the serious racers.
The triathlon will be held on Sunday, March 7, and entry forms can be collected from Country Threads and Reflex Physio & Gym in Hillston, or from the shire offices.
