Records smashed at swimming carnival

04 Feb, 2012 07:00 AM
WAGGA Christian College student James McCallum has landed family bragging rights after breaking his older brother Andy’s record at yesterday’s swimming carnival.

One of four records for the day, the 18-year-old

swimming sensation was the centre of the spotlight at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre.

McCallum’s four records – in the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly, now sit

alongside 11 other records made yesterday in the school’s history books.

Also smashing four records was 15-year-old Hayley Morris, while Mitchell Dunn, 18, Brandon Hodges, 16, Sarah Brunskill, 18 and Sarah Stevens, 14, added their names to the record list.

Record smashing was the theme of the day, but sports co-ordinator Tim Bacon said there were several sensational efforts in the pool.

“There was a few standouts in primary, Lauren Morris was very competitive and did very well as well as Jack Carey,” he said.

“Samson Lucas went in every event regardless of his skill level and showed a bit of determination to get to the end in every event.

“Brandon Hodges is someone we’re very proud of, he’ll be competing at the next level after school.”

Bacon said the conditions were perfect for a great day at the pool.

“It was a fantastic day, it was beautiful weather and we had heaps of participation,” Bacon said.

“We had our standouts but there were a lot of kids who went in and gave it a go as well and really enjoyed it.

“Talking to a few of the kids throughout the day, a lot of them said they really enjoyed the novelty events

for something a bit different.

“We had diving for the second time and we got a few more participants which was good.

“It was nice for the kids to watch, but Madeline Lucas really was the standout there with a gymnastics background.”

Someone once told me that the pool is not the correct length for an olympic pool.

Is this correct?
