Kooringal High dominates shield final for second year

18 Feb, 2010 09:45 AM
KOORINGAL High School has completed a fabulous sporting double by winning the prestigious softball Katrina Powell Shield for the second year in a row.

In a display of powerhouse batting, potent pitching and spectacular fielding, Kooringal High crushed Wagga High by six runs in the Powell Shield at French Fields in Wagga on Tuesday night.

In a repeat of last year's final, Kooringal High started as hot favourite but made a slow start to the game before exploding to a 9-3 victory.

Despite the tentative opening, Kooringal High had all the answers as the game developed and really gave supporters no cause for great alarm.

Wagga High did well to restrict Kooringal High to only one run in the first innings, but unfortunately failed to capitalise and didn't score when it had the chance to bat.

Kooringal High quickly recovered from the slow and sluggish start to find form and zoom to the lead.

Kooringal High steadily tightened its grasp on the game, and never looked in doubt of landing the convincing win.

Wagga High was first to bat, with the opening run of the game scored in the bottom of the first when Leanne Wood crossed the plate as a result of a wild throw.

Wagga High surprised their more fancied opponents in the top of the second when both Laura Harley and Bridgette Mathers scored as a result of a left-field hit from Mahala Hofert, giving them a 2-1 lead.

However, Kooringal High opted for the short game in the bottom of the second and with smart base running to supplement their excellent bunting added four runs to their tally.

Wagga High was shut out again in their third innings, whilst Kooringal added another single to make it 6-2 entering the fourth.

An even quicker shutout of Wagga in the top of the fourth was followed by a fielding innings riddled with errors which allowed Kooringal to take a commanding 9-2 lead into the fifth innings.

Hofert scored for Wagga High before they loaded up the bases to give them some chance of a belated comeback. However when the third out was made, the runners were still stranded on base leaving the final result as a 9-3 win to Kooringal High.

Following the game Bernice Powell, mother of the late Katrina, presented the Kooringal High team with the Katrina Powell Shield.

In the play-off for third and fourth Mt Austin, spearheaded by a top all round performance from young pitcher Montana Kearnes thrashed The Riverina Anglican College 5-1.

Jess Cole and Simone Jorgensen stood out for TRAC, but Kearnes was the hero for the winners.

Kildare College won a thrilling play-off for fifth and sixth positions by defeating Christian College 12 to 11.

Kildare had good players in Alicia McLean, Elizabeth Rainbird and Jayla Nix while sisters, Emma and Rebekah Post, shone for the Christian College.
