TALENTED Wagga brothers Eddie and Gordon Lagaali are in the midst of a stunning cross-code switch after appearing at Wagga City rugby training following a pre-season with Group Nine club Kangaroos.
The dynamic pair are believed to have made an allegiance to Roos for the upcoming Group Nine season, but were absent at training on Tuesday night in preference for the Boiled Lollies’ first session at Conolly Rugby Complex.
Speaking yesterday, Boiled Lollies coach Mick Small said he expected the Lagaali brothers to play a huge role this Southern Inland Rugby Union season.
“The boys have been here, they’re going to play in our backline,” he said yesterday.
“I think we’re going to see the best footy from Gordie this year.
“He’ll definitely work hard, even at training he was a shining light and his fitness levels were excellent.”
Training with different codes during a pre-season is not uncommon; however, 19-year-old Eddie is believed to have been a major factor in Roos plans after a
stellar year with the under 18s last season.
Roos coach Andrew Hinchcliffe did not want to weigh into the dilemma, but said he hopes the issue sorts itself out in time.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure what’s happening,” he said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the acquisition of the Lagaali brothers is a fabulous coup for the Boiled Lollies, who launched their new strip for the upcoming season on Tuesday night.
Small said the club has formulated a plan to take it from last season’s bottom-of-the-ladder performance into the top six this year.
“We’re realistic, we know it’s tough to make it to the top six, but I believe we can do it,” he said.
“The competition really starts again when the comp splits.”
New recruit Joe Tora is believed to have attracted his nephew to the club, a talented halfback from Fiji.
Although no names have been mentioned, Small said Tora’s nephew is an excellent pick up, having played for the Fijian under 20s last year.
