NEW Cootamundra coach Dale Thompson has broken with regular routine by deciding to unleash the Bulldogs at the $10,000 West Wyalong Knockout later this month.
In a change from Cootamundra's usual pre-season schedule, the Bulldogs will play alongside at least six other Group Nine clubs at the lucrative West Wyalong event on February 26 to 27.
Knockout co-ordinator Peter Campbell yesterday revealed Cootamundra was on the entry list following a lengthy absence.
Campbell said Thompson had obviously taken heed of recent history by nominating Cootamundra for the two-day carnival.
"The knockout has definitely developed a reputation for bringing success to teams," Campbell said yesterday.
"Kangaroos won the knockout last year and then won the Group Nine premiership.
"Likewise, Goulburn Workers made the final and went on to win their title.
"The previous year Gundagai made the knockout final and later made the Group Nine grand final.
"It's a good form guide and coaches are aware of it."
Campbell said Thompson was obviously eager to cash in on the system.
"I've been on deck (as co-ordinator) for eight years and this is the first time Coota has been entered," Campbell said.
"I believe it (absence) goes back even further."
With Cootamundra coming off a lacklustre Group Nine season last year, Thompson has elected to give the team an extended pre-season preparation.
Campbell said some coaches steered clear of the knockout because of its timing.
"They (coaches) think it's too early and some of the players are still playing cricket," Campbell said.
"Other coaches like to get their players training and getting a feel for football.
"That's why I'm surprised Temora has pulled out.
"They (Temora) entered then dropped out."
After winning only two of 16 games in 2009, the Dragons are on the rebound from their worst season in decades and may have benefited from playing at the knockout.
Counting down to the knockout, Campbell said 13 teams were nominated, with Group Nine taking seven spots.
"So far we've got the three Wagga teams (Kangaroos, Brothers, Southcity), Cootamundra, Young, Junee and Gundagai from Group Nine," Campbell said.
"Goulburn Workers are coming back and there are four teams from Group 20, us (West Wyalong), Leeton, Lakes United and Yenda.
"We've also waiting on confirmation our former coach Rohan Louden is bringing down his team from Sawtell."
Campbell said he would be chasing more teams in the coming days, possibly expanding the draw to 16 teams.
"I'll be on the phone to some of our regulars," he said.
The knockout winner will collect $8000, with the losing team from the final pocketing $2000.
"Beaten teams in the semi-finals share a set of shorts and socks," Campbell said.
Despite reports Tumut would play at the knockout, the Blues are a notable omission.
