Summons facing new challenge as selector

08 Jan, 2008 09:07 AM
However, Summons believes the task he has been set this year could top that of any he previously had in rugby league.

Summons has been announced as a member of an exclusive and elite panel of selectors tasked with the job of choosing the Country Team Of The Century.

Summons, who coached Country for eight years in the 1960s and 1970s, will join respected rugby league identities Brian Smith, Warren Ryan, David Middleton and Sean Fagan on the selection panel.

The panel, which has been formed as part of the NRL’s Centenary Celebrations, must select just 13 players from a list comprising more than 200 names.

“It’s going to be very hard to choose just 13, that’s for sure,” Summons said.

“There have been so many great players to play for Country over the years and we are going to have to make some tough and hard choices to come up with only 13.

“All of us are going to have our own opinions on certain players but it will be a matter of us putting our heads together and selecting the best team.”

Summons played 60 games for Wests between 1960 and 1964 before coming to the Riverina, where he was the captain-coach of Wagga Magpies.

A dual international, playing for both the Wallabies and the Kangaroos, Summons played five games for NSW and represented Australia on nine occasions in rugby league Tests – including

an Ashes series in England as captain-coach in 1963-1964.

With around 220 country players eligible for selection in

the team, including 70 internationals, the panel certainly does have a challenge ahead.

Past legends of the game such as the Riverina’s Laurie Daley, Les Boyd and Eric Weissel will all be vying for section as will Immortals Clive Churchill, Graeme Langlands, Bob Fulton and the legendary Andrew Johns.

Summons yesterday said he was honoured with his role on the selection committee in the year rugby league has its biggest celebration.

“I am delighted and extremely proud to be a part of this,” Summons said.

“It was a proud moment for me when I was asked and it will be nice to help out and be involved in such a big year for rugby league.

“It will be good to work with the other selectors and hopefully I will be able to contribute to the NRL Centenary Celebrations.”

The team will be announced prior to the Country versus City representative game at WIN Stadium on May 2.
