Raiders gearing up for season ahead

09 Feb, 2010 10:34 AM
CANBERRA Raiders can look forward to a better 2010 season, according to coach David Furner.

After failing to secure a top-eight finish last season, the club will be looking to improve their standing within the NRL competition.

The team and members of the coaching staff will be in Wagga over the next two days as part of their pre-season schedule, and will be holding training sessions with members of the public and at Kapooka Army Base.

"Pre-season is going pretty good, the players are all excited for the start of the season," said Furner.

"We are planning to build the players up individually instead of focus on the whole team.

"We have to get them into the right frame of mind, as well as the right physical frame."

Furner said the team started training almost two months before Christmas, and have been looking good so far.

The Raiders will come up against Penrith in the first round of the season, and Furner says he believes they are ready.

"We are looking good, all the players are excited and ready," he said.

"We will play some trial matches next week which will give us a good chance to look at them (the players) and see how they're going."

After recruiting a couple of talented players from other clubs, and introducing some of the club's younger stars, Furner believes they are a good chance to make the finals.

"That's what we work for, that's the whole aim after playing 26 rounds of matches every club just wants to be in the finals.

"We lost a few crucial games last year and games we should have won.

"We would have loved to make the finals last year, we probably should've."

Furner said the One Community program gives the club a chance to showcase the players, as well as bring league into the country.
