Mallee Men shattered by Knockout final loss

01 Mar, 2010 09:30 AM
WEST Wyalong captain Michael Loudon says the Mallee Men were shattered after missing out on claiming the West Wyalong Knockout crown at their first attempt in 16 years.

After breezing into the knockout final at Ron Crowe Oval on Saturday night, West Wyalong lost 6-0 to Kangaroos, who captured the title for the second straight year.

For West Wyalong, the loss was a body blow after qualifying for the final for the first time since 1994.

Despite the defeat, Loudon declared West Wyalong would make a concerted effort to break through for an overdue Knockout success in 2011.

Loudon said the Mallee Men had made a gallant bid for victory on Saturday night, falling one try short of ending Roos' domination.

"We are very disappointed, but I couldn't have asked for any more from the boys," said Loudon.

"Anything can happen in this competition, but you can't really go into the match without feeling confident.

"I think our dropped balls let us down, especially in the second half.

"We were probably defending too much and not attacking the line enough.

"I am extremely happy with how the boys are playing, I was very impressed with them."

West Wyalong made a vast improvement from last year's knockout, when the team was eliminated in the opening round by Orange.

The club will celebrate its 100-year anniversary next season, and Loudon says they plan on marking the occasion with a home knockout trophy.

"We will definitely be back next year," he said.

"We will be looking to improve on our attack, I think our defence is all right.

"I reckon we should be in the top five this season, but we'll see how we go.

"Everyone played really well tonight, it was a top effort from all the guys.

"The crowd was great, they really got behind us which helped us a lot."

The grand final was watched by a 1000-strong crowd on Saturday, which helped swell the gate for the two night carnival to an impressive $18,000.
