SAILING
By Simon Brunsdon
WAGGA'S Sydney to Hobart sailor, Paul Samuelson says he will not be competing in the event again despite winning his division.
Samuelson and the crew of sloop She, finished first in the PHS division two and first in the overall PHS handicap class.
They managed to reach the finish line in just over four days and twelve hours, managing to beat Samuelson's goal of five days.
She sailed into the harbour at approximately nine o'clock on the morning of New Year's Eve and the crew were greeted by friends and family, before celebrating their achievement.
A friend of Samuelson reported there were no issues with the boat or crew, apart from the captain being accidentally hit by the boom and having to receive medical attention.
Members of the crew reported the trip was much more mentally tough, as low wind speed and clear conditions made for an exceptionally slow race.
The wind apparently died down considerably just as the sloop was nearing Tasmania, and resulted in the crew resorting to merely floating on the sea's current as the sails were useless.
This was She's fourteenth Sydney to Hobart race, and possibly her last according to the owners.
The only race She did not complete was the infamous 1998 disaster Sydney to Hobart, when less than half the fleet finished.
According to Samulson's friend, this will be the last time the local sailor will compete in the prestigious race.
Samelson is currently on the return trip from Hobart, and is due to arrive in Wagga later this week.
