Counting down to two days of spectacular racing on Saturday and Sunday, Nosworthy has revealed planning for the Australian Powerboat Grand Prix event started in 2008.
“I actually applied four years ago,” Nosworthy said.
“It took about 18 months to two years for them to get back to me.
“The last 12 months have been all about organising it.”
In a stunning coup for Wagga, Nosworthy has managed to attract some of Australia’s top powerboat racers to compete in an official round of the Australian Powerboat Grand Prix series.
Billed as War On Water, the full-throttle competition will involve “tunnel boats” capable of top speeds of 250 kilometres an hour.
“There will actually be boats racing in five different classes,” Nosworthy said.
“The top category is for the fastest tunnel boats.”
For Wagga, the armada of 50 boats, crew and supporters will provide a tourism boon.
“We’re looking at 300-plus people in town for the two days,” Nosworthy said.
Drivers, including Queensland star Damien McKenzie, will start arriving in Wagga on Friday to prepare for the two days of racing.
Aside from McKenzie and fellow Queensland aces Shane Vella and David Ainley, drivers from Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia are expected to compete.
Ainley and his Express Design Racing crew will be among the first to hit Wagga, landing in town at midday on Friday.
Racing will start at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, ending at 3.30pm each afternoon.
Nosworthy, meantime, says the “best viewing” to catch the action will be from near the Wagga Boat Club, but spectators will also be able to grab vantage spots along the foreshore of Lake Albert.
“The main pit area will be at Bosley Park, which is adjacent to the boat club,” Nosworthy said.
“There will be a cost of $5 to be in the pit area.”
Facilities at Wagga Boat Club will be open for spectators and a courtesy bus will operate, by appointment, on both days.
A display of magnificent model boats will also be featured near Wagga Boat Club on the weekend.
