Errol Willis fights back to triumph

17 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
WAGGA teenage motorbike speed demon Errol Willis is within tantalising reach of clinching a coveted Supercross title.

Recovering from a horror crash in qualifying, Willis, 19, bounced back to continue his unbeaten streak in the under-19 years section of the Australasian Supercross Championship at Maitland on Saturday.

The dominant victory was the third for the year for Willis in the fast and furious competition and again stamped the Wagga Suzuki racer as an international star in the making.

Willis is now a runaway leader of the points table with 75, and only needs to gain a solitary point in the last event of the season at the weekend to capture the crown.

Coming off the blistering victory at Maitland, Willis will now head to Queensland on Saturday for the final round. Chasing a minimum one point to secure the title, Willis will race in the last round at Ipswich on Saturday.

A teammate of fellow rising star Lawson Bopping, Willis is thrilled with his efforts this year.

"It's been a perfect season so far and I really want to keep that going next weekend," Willis said.

"I'm really happy for Lawson and the team to win in the open class as well, so we are all excited to finish the year on a strong note in Queensland."

Raceline Pirelli Suzuki team manager Chris Woods revealed later Willis has displayed great determination to defy the odds to win at Maitland.

"Errol had a bit of a rough start to the day, but dug deep to get it done," Woods said.

"(Victory) now puts him one point shy of wrapping up the championship."

Riding superbly, Willis won the heat and the final at Maitland to extend his overall lead in the championship.

Team general manager Chris Tisdale was full of admiration for Willis's courage.

"Errol recovered from a heavy crash in qualifying to again prove he is the number one rider in the under-19 class," Tisdale said.

"I was surprised that he got up from that crash.

"When he went down I honestly thought the championship was gone.

"Not only did he get up and come back for the heat, but he dominated.

"The kid is extremely tough and determined."
