Unbeaten Imbolc is put to the test

19 Feb, 2010 09:21 AM
LEADING Southern District trainer Brett Cavanough will put talented three-year-old Imbolc to the test in a $100,000 race at Moonee Valley tonight.

Imbolc is unbeaten after two starts and will be given a much tougher assignment in tonight's $100,000 Aquanas Food Premium Handicap (1000m).

The speedy Danasinga gelding survived a protest to win at Corowa on debut.

He then outlasted his rivals at Wellington last week to take out a Benchmark 55 Handicap (1100m).

Cavanough has a high opinion of Imbolc and believes he deserves his chance at metropolitan level.

"We're throwing him in the deep end a little bit but I regard him as one of the best three-year-olds I've had," Cavanough said.

"He's pretty smart, I've just kept a lid on him a bit.

"Andy (Bloomfield) has said he is a little bit piggy so we'll give him the run at the Valley and he might go out after that."

Top Melbourne jockey Michael Rodd will take the ride on Imbolc, who has raced from the front at both his previous runs.

Cavanough is unsure whether he can lead tonight's event, but believes his gelding will be up there.

"They might be a bit sharp for him early," Cavanough said.

"Rodd will be given the instructions to drive forward though, and he'll land in the box seat or be leading.

"It's a test, but we'll see how he goes."

Cavanough also accepted with in-form sprinter Crown Seal in the $50,000 Variety The Children's Charity Handicap (1000m).

Cavanough is likely to scratch Crown Seal however, who has won his past two at Canberra and Wellington.

"I don't need to carve him up from the 13 alley," Cavanough said.

"He's very genuine, honest, and he's had three runs in 13 days so I'm going to suggest not to run him.

"He's excellent on wet tracks so I'll just keep him ticking over and look around for the slow and heavy tracks."

Cavanough suggested Crown Seal will head to the $40,000 Camarena Handicap (1000m) on Black Opal Stakes day at Canberra.

He also has the $50,000 Flat Knacker Handicap (900m) at home on Albury Gold Cup day.

Today will be a big day for Cavanough, with eight runners in at Albury's bumper 10-race programme.
