VANDALS have caused significant damage to parts of Temora's golf course after driving their car over two of the greens.

Temora Golf Club's members have been left fuming after vandals performed "burnouts" on course greens during the new year festive period.

Police have described the incident as a senseless act of vandalism that has shocked and appalled the Temora community.

A police report stated the incident happened sometime between 7pm Saturday and 7:50am Sunday.

Temora Golf Club secretary, Darryl Kahlefeldt described the perpetrators as "a bunch of idiots".

"They took their car onto the golf course for some reason and decided to go for a joy-ride," said Kahlefeldt.

"It's terrible, I can't see why they would do it, it's just a stupid and selfish thing to do."

Kahlefeldt says the club is now talking about putting security gates up at the front of the course to stop the incident occurring again.

"It's sad for the people who like to go for a stroll or walk their dog, but it has to be done unfortunately."

Kahlefeld t said volunteers worked hard Sunday morning to make the course playable for that day's competition.

Although fifty golfers were still able to play their usual Sunday round, Kahlefeldt said the two greens in question were difficult to putt on and interrupted play.

"It's going to take more time and hard work than actual money," said Kahlefeldt.

"Everyone at the club is basically voluntary except the greenkeeper.

"It is a shame because the course has been looking really good thanks to the recent rains."

Kahlefeldt says although they hold several competitions every week including three weekday tournaments, they should not be too affected.

He said with some watering and some more seed laid the greens should be fully repaired within a month.

Police are still investigating the scene and have not yet reported any new leads.

They said they are currently seeking public assistance and anyone with information is asked to contact them.
