WAGGA is primed to host the first-ever fencing tournament held in the Riverina or country New South Wales.

After a changing of the guard, the newly appointed NSW Fencing Association development officer is looking at the prospect of holding a Riverina Championships.

Handstand Factory fencing coach Julian Smith said it will be the first time Wagga competitors will have the hometown advantage.

"This will be the first tournament held in the Riverina," he said.

With the tournament nearing fruition, Smith said it underlines the growing interest and strength of fencing in the city.

"Fencing is on the rise in Wagga, it is growing," Smith said.

The chance for Wagga to host the event is testament to the city's growing profile within the sport.

Wagga competed strongly at the State Championships and came away with impressive results.

"Luita Aichinger finished third at the state titles and Kim Manton was the novice fencer of the year last year," Smith said.

"We also had a first and third in the men's novice at the State competition."

Smith describes the strength of fencing in Wagga as "excellent".
