A TEACHER from Wagga's Mater Dei Catholic College has been king-hit by a student from Griffith High School in the violent and bloody aftermath to a schoolboy rugby union game.
The teacher, who is a co-coach of the Mater Dei College under 15 years rugby team, was trying to shield one of his players from attack by several Griffith High students when he was savagely punched.
It has also been alleged the teacher was kicked by Griffith High students when he fell to the ground.
The brutal incident came as students from Griffith High and Mater Dei College brawled following a Wiburd Shield game at Coro Ground in Griffith on Tuesday.
Players as young 14 years old were involved in the ugly melee, which was universally condemned by education and rugby union officials yesterday.
Several separate investigations have been launched into the shocking display, with Mater Dei Catholic College principal Greg Miller yesterday not ruling out calling for police intervention.
Appalled by the vicious attack on a teacher from his school, Miller said he was conducting his own inquiry into Tuesday's brawl.
"All we've done at this stage is try to gather information," Miller said yesterday.
"I've met with the boys and asked them to record what took place so we can move forward with the matter.
"I really can't say anymore until I have read what the boys have said."
Miller, however, did not dismiss the prospect of asking police to open an investigation. "I'll wait and see the information," he said.
"There are options for the school and the parents (of the students).
"I will speak to the parents, but I don't think it will be resolved all that quickly."
Several students from both schools were injured in the brawl, which erupted after the finish of the fiery game.
Concerned at the escalating on-field violence, including high tackles and punches, Griffith-based referee Brian Halse called off the game five minutes before scheduled full-time.
Halse had earlier sin-binned four players for various offences and sent-off a Griffith High player for a high shot on a Mater Dei opponent.
Amid simmering tensions, the wild fight broke out as Mater Dei players attempted to shake hands with their opponents.
It is alleged a Griffith High player made an unprovoked attack on a Mater Dei player, leading to a full-scale eruption.
Players from both teams traded blows, with students on the sidelines even running onto the field to get involved.
Southern Inland Rugby Union officials were utterly dismayed by the brawl, which is threatening to damage the image of the rugby union in the region.
Wagga-based Brumbies development officer Mark Calverley said yesterday SIRU had "no jurisdiction" over Wiburd Shield games, but he asked for a "match report" from referee Halse.
"I actually spoke to Brian Halse this morning," Calverley said.
"He said things got out of control."
SIRU officials are expected to closely monitor junior games involving Griffith teams at Conolly Rugby Park on Sunday.
Several players from Griffith High and Mater Dei College teams will be involved.
