Gundagai is minor premier

31 Aug, 2009 09:16 AM
GUNDAGAI secured the Group Nine minor premiership and a home final by thrashing Young 62-16 at Anzac Park yesterday.

Coupled with Tumut's last-gasp 20-16 win over Kangaroos at Twickenham yesterday, the Tigers landslide victory pushed the Tigers to the top of the table.

Significantly, Gundagai will now play Kangaroos for the first place in the Group Nine grand final in a qualifying final at Anzac Park on Sunday week.

Gundagai secretary Mick Wheeler said the advantage of playing Roos at Anzac Park was not to be underestimated.

"It's a good result," Wheeler said.

"I suppose playing Roos at home is to our advantage and to Roos disadvantage."

Inspired by five-eighth Matt Rose, the Tigers tore strips off Young yesterday, bolting on 11 tries to rout the Cherrypickers.

Gundagai led 34-6 and had the game well and truly won.

Others to shine for the Tigers included Jason Ferris, Daniel Wagon and in-form winger Ben Reardon.
