RIVERINA Lions have maintained their winning top home ground record by beating Belconnen Magpies in an AFL Canberra Women's League thriller at McPherson Oval on Saturday.

Playing in wind, rain and mud, the Lions beat Belconnen by eight points to cement a spot on the top of the table.

Kahli Abbott, Shannon Carroll, Amy Coote and skipper Julie McLean kicked a goal each for the Lions as they won 4.6 (30) to 3.4 (22).

Lions' coach Tim Byrne said later the team had produced a spirit defensive effort.

"Given the poor conditions, the win can be attributed to the grit and determination of our more experienced players," Byrne said.

The Lions will play second-placed Eastlake Demons at Kingston Oval on Sunday.
